Two close friends of mine requested that I keep a blog now that I’m in Boston, and I’ve been remiss in doing so, mainly because I’ve been both busy and lazy. Three weeks in, those circumstances haven’t really changed, but I figured I could throw something together.

I’m at the beginning of the most exciting and important stretch in my life so far. I’m in grad school to improve my chances of jump-starting my career in a good place, and I’m in a relationship (unfortunately, it’s long-distance at the moment) that I believe is going to last the rest of my life. Things are, on the whole, awesome. A lot has happened in the past three weeks. Here’s a quick rundown:

- I moved into a five-person house in Cambridge with four kids just out of college. Not only am I the oldest housemate, I’m also the only one who graduated from a school known more for its athletics than its academics (three Dartmouth grads and one from Carnegie-Mellon).

- I’m one of 20 TAs in a big survey class that all undergraduate Communication students have to take. I run a 22-student discussion section and I’m in charge of grading their work. Imagine me in front of these kids every Friday…it’s hilarious, but I bring it.

- At our first grad student party, I turned two drink tickets into 10 drinks (more than a few GrandMa and Sprites) through hustling and schmoozing. Needless to say, there was a lot of dancing and a hangover in the morning.

- I went to Sioux City for my girlfriend’s friends’ wedding. Met a huge chunk of her family and flew on four airplanes. Was liked by everyone, I assume. That’ll be important soon.

Either way, things are going well. I’ll be doing a lot of traveling throughout this time…NYC next weekend and back to Atlanta in early October. Should be fun.

I realize I haven’t put anything original on here in a while, which is fine. It’s Tumblr. I don’t have to be original. I just have to be able to find things I like and pass them on to survive in this medium. But I can honestly say it’s been a couple weeks since I really composed anything worthwhile, and now’s as good a time as any.

Next Thursday, I’ll move to Boston and a few days after that, I’ll start graduate school. Those facts, which present themselves more often these days, make me have mini panic attacks. As worldly as a person as I think myself to be, I’ve really only lived in one state in my life. As independent as I’d like to be, I’ve never lived more than 45 minutes away from my family. Most of my friends are here in Georgia. I’ve never made the big leap we all have to make in our lives until now, and it scares me to death.

Knowing all that, there’s a bigger issue: my relationship. Every one of my friends has mentioned the irony of me meeting the girl of my dreams two months before I move 1,000 miles away, and it’s not lost on me. The last 2+ months, on a personal level, have been among the best of my life, and we don’t want it to end here. So a long-distance relationship is in the cards for us. Figures. I’m less worried than I was a month ago, and I think we have a good plan (see each other once a month at least and alternate who travels). If we can make it work over the next year and a half, we can make it last.

I don’t doubt at all that my leaving will be a good thing in the end for all phases of my life, but it’d be hard for me to claim I’m human if I didn’t admit I’m nervous.
